Resonant microsphere |
Resonant cavities are key components in photonic circuits, providing feedback, wavelength selectivity, energy storage to allow dispersion control and enhanced nonlinearity, resonant filtering, waveguiding with low bend radius and ultra-low threshold lasing. Planar waveguides will present an ideal platform to realize many of these functions. The current interests include the coupling of light from the planar waveguides into the microspheres by exciting the Whispering Gallery Modes (WGM) and the fabrication of various platforms for micro/nano positioning the microspheres onto the planar waveguides either physically or chemically. Devices incorporating microspheres and planar waveguides for various applications such as wavelength filtering, multiplexing/demultiplexing, switching, sensing, lasing etc. are being designed, fabricated and characterized.
