The University of Southampton

Shuyi Fu was a MSc student at the ORC from 2018 - 2019.  She was kind enough to answer our survey about her experiences here at the University of Southampton.  She sums up her experience at Southampton as brilliant.  We can't get any better feedback than that.

Why did you choose to come and study at Southampton? I was doing a master in China too, and my university had a double degree program for students who majored in optical engineering, and luckily I got a position of this program , so that I was able to do another master degree in Southampton.

What were you anxious about before coming to Southampton?

I was anxious about the difficulties of courses, because I was studied material science in undergraduate life which was really different from optics.

Once at Southampton, how were your fears overcome?

Fortunately, I got lots of coursemates who were pretty nice and helped me a lot in study.

What is it like studying here?

I feel very glad to have the chance to study in Southampton, I love the teachers , my coursemates and the society I joined, all of them colored my life.

How do you rate study facilities at the University?

The experimental facilities in ORC are the best I used before, the libraries opened the whole day during the exams that we could have a place to revise them together.

What have been your Southampton ‘highlights’ (best experiences) so far?

I joined the Light Opera Society, and took part in many shows with friends I met there, that was the first time I performed opera on stage, I felt really proud when there were a lot of audience came to our shows.

How has your time at Southampton helped you to grow as a person?

I learned to arrange my time better, because we had to take many courses and at the same time I needed to go to the rehearsals of my society every week. My understanding of optics and photonics has also been greatly improved after the year.
What are you enjoying most about your course?  I love presentations , they were good chances to show myself.
Do you have the opportunity to study modules outside of your core subject area?  Yes, we have many elective courses to choose

Did you stay in University accommodation?

Instead of living in the student dormitory, I lived in a house with several classmates.

What is the city of Southampton like to live in?

Southampton is a quiet and peaceful city, where life is convenient and safe.
What one word sums up how you feel about your experiences so far at Southampton?

Brilliant
