ORC Professor named Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
Head of Integrated Photonic Devices, Professor James Wilkinson, from the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his contributions to integrated photonics.
IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership in the IEEE and recognised by the technical community as a prestigious honour and an important career achievement. The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest.
Professor Wilkinson established the Integrated Photonic Devices Group in the Optoelectronics Research Centre in 1990, and was made Professor of Optoelectronics in 2000. His research combines guided-wave optics with microelectronic fabrication technologies, with a particular emphasis on lasers, optical amplifiers, chemical and biochemical sensors, and point-of-care diagnostic technologies, and his team has made advances in many materials systems for optical waveguide devices.
On learning of his Fellowship, James said: “I am honoured to be made a Fellow of the IEEE, this is a highly prestigious award and a significant milestone in my career to date. Above all, I am thankful to all the wonderful people I have worked with over the years and I look forward to attending the award ceremony and the future opportunities this recognition presents.”
The IEEE is the world’s leading professional association for advancing technology innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. Through its 400,000 plus members in 160 countries, the association is a leading authority on a wide variety of areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics.
Notes to editors: Dedicated to the advancement of technology, the IEEE publishes 30 percent of the world’s literature in the electrical and electronics engineering and computer science fields, and has developed more than 1300 active industry standards. The association also sponsors or co-sponsors nearly 1700 international technical conferences each year.
