Exciting news for scientific advancement in Sub-Saharan Africa!
We are thrilled to announce a major new initiative aimed at advancing scientific research, innovation, and economic development across sub-Saharan Africa.
Physicists from the UK and sub-Saharan Africa are embarking on 13 ambitious projects to tackle critical challenges in climate resilience, sustainable energy, and healthcare. These projects are part of the £10.7 million Africa-UK Physics Partnership (AUPP) Programme, led by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) in collaboration with the Institute of Physics (IoP).
The AUPP Programme aims to develop a highly skilled cohort of physicists ready to address Africa’s evolving science, technology, and policy needs while fostering long-term UK-African partnerships.
One of the standout projects, led by Professor Senthil Ganapathy from the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), in collaboration with researchers from Kyambogo University, Maseno University, Busitema University, and the University of Rwanda, focuses on creating an efficient photoelectrochemical green energy system for hydrogen generation.
The inaugural Africa-UK Physics Partnership workshop was held at Kyambogo University in Kampala, Uganda, on June 4–5, 2025, as part of this STFC-funded project.
