Professor Nikolay Zheludev, FRS, Deputy Director of the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton, and head of the nanophotonics and metamaterials research group, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering for his ‘leadership and technical contributions to optical metamaterials and nanophotonics’.

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) President, C.D. (Dan) Mote Jr, announced the 86 newly elected Members and 18 Foreign Members in February this year. Members are elected to NAE membership by their peers (current NAE members).

Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honours those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education, including significant contributions to engineering literature, and to the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education’.

On receiving acknowledgement of his election, Professor Zheludev said: "I am flattered by the announcement of my election to the NAE in the USA. This is further recognition of the outstanding research that is being undertaking across the ORC at the University of Southampton and at The Photonics Institute at NTU Singapore, our collaboration partner.”

Professor Sir David Payne, Director of the ORC, said: “It is always tremendously gratifying when a colleague receives an honour at this level. Nikolay is a leader within his field, respected internationally for his work in nanophotonics and metamaterials. He thoroughly deserves to be elected to the NAE.”

Founded in 1964, the NAE is a private, independent, non-profit institution that provides engineering leadership in service to the nation (the USA). Its mission is to advance the well-being of the nation by promoting a vibrant engineering profession and by marshalling the expertise and insights of eminent engineers to provide independent advice to the federal government on matters involving engineering and technology. Professor Zheludev, along with other individuals in the newly elected class, will be formally inducted during a ceremony at the NAE's annual meeting at its headquarters in Washington, D.C., on 6 October, 2019.
