Professor Sir David Payne, Director of the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton, has been elected as a Foreign Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) for his pioneering contributions to the world of science and relationship with scientific activities in India.

The Indian National Science Academy was established in January 1935 with the object of promoting science in India, establishing links with international bodies to foster collaboration and harnessing scientific knowledge for the cause of humanity and national welfare. The Academy consists of over 900 Fellows and just 95 Foreign Fellows.

On receiving acknowledgement of his Senior Fellowship, Sir David said: "I am delighted to be selected as a Foreign Fellow to this most prestigious Academy and I look forward to building a closer working relationship with its scientists and scientific organisations to further the impact of optical engineering internationally.”

The President of the Academy, Ajay Kumar Sood, said: “We are proud to have a person of your distinction as a Foreign Fellow of INSA. We look forward to having your active interactions with our scientists thereby bringing a closer relationship of the scientific communities of both our countries.”

Sir David is invited to participate in the Academy’s Anniversary General Meeting in late December held at the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad. His election will formally take effect from January 1, 2019.
