The Future Photonics Hub is to demonstrate its latest advanced materials research at MRE

The Future Photonics Hub will be joined by the National Epitaxy Centre and ChAMP – Chalcogenide Advanced Manufacturing Partnership – to demonstrate some of its latest research at the Materials Research Exchange event at London’s Business Design Centre on 12-13 March, 2018.

This research is underpinned by £200M fabrication facilities at the University of Southampton and University of Sheffield, and spans 2D materials, metamaterials, novel glass, optical fibre, III-V technologies, silicon photonics and mid-IR photonics.

On display at the event Our stand will be showcasing a live demonstration of GLS infrared transmitting glass – a radically new chalcogenide glass and alternative to toxic arsenic-based glasses. This glass offers optical transparency and thermal stability up to 550°c, a safer and more economical production, over 200 times greater performance and overall transmission, and can be used in a wide range of applications such as IR and non-linear optics, high efficiency thin-film solar cells, high-capacity batteries and sensors. Also on display will be our Hollow Core Fibre (HCF) preforms, currently being explored within Airguide Photonics – a £6m EPSRC-funded programme aiming to revolutionise fibre optics and provide the UK with a world-leading position in the technology and the new services it will support.

The National Epitaxy Centre will be displaying advanced silicon wafers. The Centre is a collaboration between the Universities of Sheffield, Cambridge and University College London – which provides high quality Semiconductor Epitaxy for custom designed structures and devices.

Our experts will be on hand to discuss the ways that the Hub can help support the rapid commercialisation of emerging photonics technologies by working on joint projects to develop materials, devices and fabrication processes with ease of integration and production at their core.

The conference This two day conference and exhibition, hosted by the Knowledge Transfer Network, is a major event providing an excellent opportunity to bring together under one roof displays of how the leading materials research groups in the UK are harnessing and building on the various strengths in materials science and engineering.
