Published: 21 November 2006

On the first anniversary of the fire that destroyed ORC labs, demolition of the last section of the damaged Mountbatten complex began to prepare the site for construction.

On Monday 30 October, Professor Wendy Hall, head of the University’s School of Electronics and Computer Science took the controls of a demolition machine and symbolically started the final stages of razing the damaged Mountbatten Building to the ground. Members of the ORC and ECS that had been affected by the blaze, which destroyed unique laboratory facilities including a state-of-the art clean room, watched as the remains crumbled to the ground. This event was also witnessed by local journalists and press photographers. Construction of the new building is due to start early next year.
