Industry Day first for Southampton’s Centre for Photonic Metamaterials

Published: 18 September 2012

Southampton’s Centre for Photonic Metamaterials held its first Industry Open Day on Sept 13th at the ORC’s renowned Mountbatten Building research facility.

The day showcased emerging technologies and application opportunities presented by metamaterials across the photonics domain. It featured talks from distinguished keynote speakers; Profs. Nader Engheta (University of Pennsylvania, USA) and Ian Youngs (DSTL, UK); the Director of Southampton's metamaterials programme Prof. Nikolay Zheludev (Deputy Director, ORC); and a number of senior researchers from the Centre for Photonic Metamaterials.

Nikolay explained: “The Centre for Photonic Metamaterials is developing the materials upon which the next photonic revolution will be based – media with extraordinary properties and functionalities achieved through structuring at the sub-wavelength scale.

“Our work is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and events like this increase engagement of the UK’s world-leading research base in this field with industry – a primary aim. We’ve had an excellent response to our first Industry Day and look forward to building on this success.”
