Southampton makes top 50 in Nature Index Rising Stars

The University of Southampton has confirmed its place amongst the world’s leading universities for high-quality research by placing 41 in the Nature Index 2016 Rising Stars supplement.

The Rising Stars supplement identifies institutions showing the most significant growth in high-quality published research between 2012 and 2015. Southampton ranks 41 amongst the most improved institutions in the world, sixth in Europe and fourth in the UK behind only Oxford, Manchester and Imperial College.

Earlier this year, the Nature Index placed Southampton at 121 overall in the world and 25 in Europe for its contribution to high-quality science papers published during 2015.

The Nature Index tracks the research of more than 8,000 global institutions by measuring the number of articles published in 68 world-leading natural science journals, including Nature, weighted by the relative contribution made by individuals for multi-author publications.

The Rising Stars supplement, which includes a feature on Southampton, highlights the University’s global reach as over 74 per cent of all papers in the Nature Index citing the University of Southampton's international collaboration with institutions, particularly with partners across Europe, Asia and the United States as one of its success factors.

“The University of Southampton’s status amongst the Rising Stars in the Nature Index underlines the growing reach and impact of our natural sciences research around the world,” said Professor Tim Elliott, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise). “The supplement also underlines our reputation for international collaboration which is key to our success and an important part of why our research features so frequently in these world leading journals.”
