Pulsed laser deposited epitaxial garnet films for efficient low threshold waveguide lasers
Robert W.Eason, Tim May-Smith, Christos Grivas, Dave Shepherd
Abstract
Pulsed laser deposition is a mature technique capable of producing extremely high quality epitaxial single crystalline films. We have grown doped garnet films (Gd3Ga5O12) on YAG substrates, with thicknesses from a few μm to more than 100 μm for both single mode and multimode waveguide applications. Our best losses for single mode guides are less than 0.1dB cm-1, and the resulting structures yield excellent waveguide lasing.
