ORC graduates careers are set to shine
The future careers of ORC’s graduates are looking very bright indeed following this year’s graduation ceremony. Held on July 26th, this year's event saw 14 graduands from the ORC honoured by Vice Chancellor Professor Don Nutbeam at the Turner Sims Concert Hall.
Celebrations continued following the platform ceremony at the packed reception hosted by ORC Deputy Director, Professor David Richardson. The new graduates, their supervisors, families and friends toasted their careers ahead with a glass of champagne over lunch.
The ORC has a history of turning out some of the photonics and communications industries’ best researchers and entrepreneurs and this year is no different. Joseph Kakande is one such example, having won the Marconi Young Scholars award earlier this year; Kang Kang Chen has already got his career off to a flying start, he’s been awarded £60,000 dollars in funding from China’s 3551 Talents Plan and has set up his own company working on short pulse fibre lasers. He now employs more than 15 people back in his home town of Wuhan in China.
Professor Dave Richardson comments: “Graduation day is an important annual event in the ORC’s calendar and it is always an uplifting experience celebrating our new graduates along with their families, supervisors and colleagues. The ORC has many alumni in senior positions in leading companies and universities across the world and it is great to see the progress that our 2011/12 graduate cohort has already made in taking the next steps in their own careers. We expect great things of them and look forward to following their future success.”
Congratulations go to: Thomas Butcher, Angela Camerlingo, Hamish Hunt, Jaclyn Chan, Kang Kang Chen, Behrad Golipour, Joseph Kakande, Sheng Liu, Jack O'Sullivan, Katrin Pechstedt, Katherine Sloyan, Jedrzej Szelc, Kristian Thaller and Luis Zuniga.
