Marie Curie Fellowship boosts career prospects for researcher

Dr Claudio Oton, a Research Fellow from the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton, has received a post-doctoral intra-European fellowship from the Marie Curie Foundation. These prestigious fellowships aim to widen researchers' career prospects and promote excellence and innovation in European research.

‘Receiving this fellowship opens up a whole host of great opportunities for me and I know that I will gain very important research experience for my career,’ comments Dr Oton. ‘I am delighted that I can continue to work with world-leading teams at the ORC.’

The goal of the project in which Dr. Oton is involved is to assess the viability of silicon-sensitised erbium doped materials systems for optical device applications. This would allow LED excitation of erbium doped fibre amplifiers or lasers, and compatibility with silicon technology, which could provide a breakthrough in the telecommunications industry.

This scheme is part of the European 6th Framework which is the EU’s main instrument for funding research in Europe. The 7th Framework has just published new Marie Curie calls.
