Published: 17 June 2009

Kate Sloyan, a first year PhD student at the ORC won a poster prize at the recent European Materials Research Society (EMRS) Spring Meeting in Strasbourg.

The prize for the best poster presented during EMRS 2009 Symposium Q was awarded to Kate for her poster entitled: "The effect of laser pulse synchronicity on thin garnet films fabricated by dual-beam combinatorial Pulsed Laser Deposition."

She was presented with a certificate and 100 euros.

After receiving the prize Kate said: “It was a very pleasant surprise. It's certainly been a confidence boost, which I've needed just before my 8 month viva!”

Kate’s PhD supervisor, Professor Rob Eason said: “It was a well deserved award, as the work had been performed in an extremely systematic way, and addressed a fundamental problem in the area of combinatorial pulsed laser deposition. In her eight months at the ORC so far she has submitted her first journal paper, and also presented this poster at the International EMRS conference. The group is now eagerly looking forward to her next ten journal papers!”
