The University of Southampton

Andy Webb PhD Photonics, 2013

I had always wanted to pursue a PhD but I was aware that gaining on-the-job experience was equally as important in furthering my career in science and engineering.

The ORC is well known in the field as being at the forefront of research in optical fibres. Being able to study and work somewhere with such a wide range of technologies and equipment was a huge advantage in broadening my knowledge of photonics.

At the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) I was fortunate enough to be able to follow both routes, initially working as an Engineer and then enrolling on a PhD alongside my employment.

The ORC is well known in the field as being at the forefront of research in optical fibres. Being able to study and work somewhere with such a wide range of technologies and equipment was a huge advantage in broadening my knowledge of photonics.

My first job after gaining my PhD is at Fibrecore, a leading manufacturer of specialty optical fibre, based in Southampton. Having studied and worked with fibre technologies at the ORC for more than 12 years, I have been able to acquire a huge skill base in cleanroom-based fabrication processes that is proving invaluable in furthering my career.
