Wavevector selective surfaces

Wavevector selective surfaces
Wavevector selective surfaces
We demonstrate for the first time that a planar metamaterial (metasurface) can act as a wavefector selective surface and tunnel vision device, effectively discriminating incident waves by their wavevectors. The effect results in arbitrary-shaped wavefronts becoming planar as they traverse the plane of the metasurface in the absence of active/passive spatial phase modulation or adaptive feedback. This new functionality of the metasurfaces can be exploited for enhancing observational instruments, long-distance free-space communications in strongly scattering or turbid environment, and new-principle cloaking.

Abstract

We demonstrate for the first time that a planar metamaterial (metasurface) can act as a wavefector selective surface and tunnel vision device, effectively discriminating incident waves by their wavevectors. The effect results in arbitrary-shaped wavefronts becoming planar as they traverse the plane of the metasurface in the absence of active/passive spatial phase modulation or adaptive feedback. This new functionality of the metasurfaces can be exploited for enhancing observational instruments, long-distance free-space communications in strongly scattering or turbid environment, and new-principle cloaking.
