Advances in photonic bandgap fiber technology for optical communications
Hollow core photonic bandgap fibres offer a number of unique optical properties of relevance to optical communications including low latency. ultralow optical nonlinearity and potentially ultralow transmission loss. Here we review recent progress in the area outlining advances in our understanding of the fundamental guidance properties of this radically different fibre type and the latest developments in fibre design, fabrication, characterisation and associated supporting technologies. We conclude with an overview of various system experiments that demonstrate their unique properties and potential for applications in data communication systems of varying distance scales.

Abstract

Hollow core photonic bandgap fibres offer a number of unique optical properties of relevance to optical communications including low latency. ultralow optical nonlinearity and potentially ultralow transmission loss. Here we review recent progress in the area outlining advances in our understanding of the fundamental guidance properties of this radically different fibre type and the latest developments in fibre design, fabrication, characterisation and associated supporting technologies. We conclude with an overview of various system experiments that demonstrate their unique properties and potential for applications in data communication systems of varying distance scales.
