Compensation of plasmonic losses in metamaterial using nonlinear interactions

Compensation of plasmonic losses in metamaterial using nonlinear interactions
Compensation of plasmonic losses in metamaterial using nonlinear interactions
We demonstrate for the first time that near plasmonic resonances the local field enhancement factor, which controls the efficiency of nonlinear interactions, can have a negative value, thus offering a new way of compensating losses in metamaterials. Using a mode-locked femtosecond laser of only a few mW of average power and a metamaterial structure of asymmetrically split ring apertures in a 50 nm thick gold film we observed a resonant conversion of nonlinear absorption into nonlinear bleaching leading to a 12% increase of the metamaterial’s transmission.

Abstract

We demonstrate for the first time that near plasmonic resonances the local field enhancement factor, which controls the efficiency of nonlinear interactions, can have a negative value, thus offering a new way of compensating losses in metamaterials. Using a mode-locked femtosecond laser of only a few mW of average power and a metamaterial structure of asymmetrically split ring apertures in a 50 nm thick gold film we observed a resonant conversion of nonlinear absorption into nonlinear bleaching leading to a 12% increase of the metamaterial’s transmission.
