Erbium-doped fibre amplifier with flattened gain spectrum

Erbium-doped fibre amplifier with flattened gain spectrum
Erbium-doped fibre amplifier with flattened gain spectrum
An optical notch filter is incorporated within the length of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier. With careful choice of filter characteristics and location, we are able to enhance the amplifier gain at wavelengths around 1550 nm and demonstrate an amplifier with 27 dB gain and 33 nm bandwidth. In addition, the saturation characteristics of the amplifier are uniform across its gain spectrum making it ideal for WDM application.

Abstract

An optical notch filter is incorporated within the length of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier. With careful choice of filter characteristics and location, we are able to enhance the amplifier gain at wavelengths around 1550 nm and demonstrate an amplifier with 27 dB gain and 33 nm bandwidth. In addition, the saturation characteristics of the amplifier are uniform across its gain spectrum making it ideal for WDM application.
