A loss comparison of flat-fibre and silica-on-silicon direct UV written waveguides using a novel Bragg grating measurement technique
We demonstrate a novel method for measuring propagation loss using UV written waveguides in two different planar geometrics flat-fibre [1] and silica-on-silicon [2]. The method allows simple and effective measurement without the need for physical cutback. The Direct Grating Writing (DGW) technique is used to produce Bragg gratings and waveguides simultaneously by locally changing the refractive index of a photosensitive core layer [2]. The core layers were doped with Germanium (Ge) and Boron (B) to increase the photosensitivity. The losses were measured by taking the ratio between the reflectivities in the forward and reverse directions of a series of Bragg gratings at different wavelengths distributed along the waveguide.
