Tunable chirality in photonic metamaterials

Tunable chirality in photonic metamaterials
Tunable chirality in photonic metamaterials
We introduce the concept of extrinsic chirality and show that polarization phenomena of optical activity, circular dichroism and asymmetric transmission that are normally associated with three- and two- dimensional molecular chirality could be seen in nonchiral planar metamaterial structures if the left-right asymmetry is provided by the mutual orientation of the light wave and the structure. We also demonstrate that polarization effects of extrinsic chirality can be easily controlled by the tilt angle at which the light wave enters metamaterial and are strongly influenced by the environment leading to a new opportunity for creating tunable polarization devices.
