Dr Walter Belardi

Research Staff

Dr Walter Belardi is a senior research fellow at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), University of Southampton (United Kingdom).

He was awarded his Laurea degree in Electronics Engineering at the Università degli Studi di Pavia (Italy) and his PhD degree in Optoelectronics at the ORC with a thesis on "Holey optical fibres for high nonlinearity devices". His principal research contributions are in the numerical design, fabrication and applications of novel optical fibre technologies. He has co-authored more than 80 scientific publications and 2 patents.

His most important personal achievements range from the invention in 2000 of a double clad fabrication approach for Microstructured Optical Fibres(MOFs), the first application in 2003 of the spinning technique to MOFs,the first inclusion in 2005 of an elliptical hole within a MOF, to the most recent results on hollow core optical fibres.

These include the very first numerical explanation in 2013 of the effects of the core boundary curvature in a hollow optical fibre, the very first introduction in 2013 of a radically novel design for low loss hollow core optical fibres based on a nested ring structure and a free core boundary, the first theoretical and experimental demonstration in 2014 of low bending loss in very large core hollow antiresonant fibers for the mid-infrared, the demonstration in 2015 of the very first low loss hollow optical fibres in common low quality and cheap borosilicate glass, the theoretical finding and very first demonstration in 2016 of composite material hollow antiresonant fibres.
