Novel Glass facilities

Our Novel Glass facilties offer a wide range of specialized glass making and fibre drawing equipment including: a variety of horizontal and vertical tube furnaces, chamber furnaces, high and low temperature ovens, vacuum processing, L-shaped glove box system for batching, melting, annealing and casting of glass under dry nitrogen atmosphere (10ppm), testometric extrusion equipment, hydraulic extrusion equipment, thermogravimetric and thermomechanical analyzers.

Furnaces

  • Wide range of horizontal and vertical tube furnaces, chamber furnaces, high and low temperature ovens, vacuum processing
  • Processing in dry nitrogen, argon, oxygen, SF6, hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide
  • Speciality heating including rapid thermal annealing and RF induction

Key thermal measurements

Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA) measures the change in mass of a sample as the sample is heated, cooled or held at a constant (isothermal) temperature.

Thermomechanical Analyzer (TMA) measures dimension changes of a sample (such as expansion or contraction) as a function of temperature, time and force applied to the sample.

Glass extrusion and pressing equipment

Testometric Extrusion Equipment

  • Loads of up to 100kN can be applied
  • Speeds from 0.010mm/minute to 300mm/minute
  • Range of Test Protocols Available
  • Extrusion of Cylindrical Preforms, with Complex Geometries possible, currently up to 16mm OD & 1000mm length, depending upon geometry
  • Process Temperatures currently up to 660oC

Hydraulic Extrusion Equipment

  • Loads of up to 85kN can be applied
  • Constant Pressure Control
  • Extrusion of Cylindrical Preforms, with Complex Geometries possible, currently up to 16mm OD & 1000mm length, depending upon geometry
  • Process Temperatures currently up to 660oC

Commissioning the Novel Glass Facilities

The Novel Glass facilties can be commissioned on a daily basis in order to assist your particular line of research. Whether you are a member of the ORC, a member of another department within this or other university, or even a scientist from industry or other research establishment, you are welcome to make use of the Novel Glass facility.
