Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Mid-IR to NIR wavelength conversion
Location: Highfield Campus
Salary: £27,428 to £33,734
Contract: Full Time Fixed Term until 31/08/2013
Closing Date: Friday 9 September 2011
Interview Date: To be confirmed
Reference: 036211EH
Applicants are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position to work on a project relating to the wide-band wavelength conversion of mid-infrared signals and their detection in the near-infrared. The project is part of a new European Union collaborative research programme in the area of mid-infrared photonic systems. The successful candidate will be engaged in research on both the specification and characterisation of optical fibres fabricated in-house using novel glasses, as well as the design, implementation and testing of nonlinear wavelength conversion systems based on these fibres. There will also be the opportunity to obtain familiarisation with silicon waveguide based nonlinear devices developed by other partners in the project through experimental work.
Applicants must have a PhD in Physics/Engineering or equivalent and a strong background in (both linear and nonlinear) fibre optics. Relevant experience at post-graduate/post-doctoral level in fibre sensing, optical instrumentation or fibre lasers would be highly desirable.
A strong experimental background along with a keen interest in developing novel, practical, application-optimised optical systems in collaboration with project partners working in other fields is required. The applicants are expected to work as part of a cohesive team, to interact with fibre modellers, fabricators and end users and to contribute to the dissemination of high quality research results. It is expected that the appointed candidate will occasionally travel to attend project meetings and present the results of the work to technical conferences.
The appointment is initially for a 2-year period, (ideally starting 1 September 2011 or soon thereafter).
The closing date for this post is 9th September 2011.
