CASE sponsored PhD Studentship: Integrated Optical Pressure Sensors

This PhD studentship is CASE sponsored by aerospace manufacturer Parker Hannifin (UK). With an aim to develop miniaturised pressure sensors based on optical fibres, fibre Bragg gratings, and planar integration. The project will involve the development of a new optical fibre-on-planar composite and draw upon microfabrication concepts understood in the field of MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) and apply them to integrated optics.

Research Fellow: Novel fibre lasers and amplifiers for emerging telecommunications networks

A post is available for a highly motivated researcher of outstanding calibre to work on the development of novel fibre amplifiers and lasers for emerging telecommunications bands, in particular operating at wavelength around 2000nm. The amplifiers should provide the high- gain, low-noise characteristics required of a telecommunications amplifier and ideally be diode-pumped. The primary focus will be on amplifiers based on the rare earth ions thulium and holmium with an emphasis on direct diode pumped operation. Applications of the technology developed within the fields of optical communications, high power lasers and optical fibre sensors will be considered.
