The University of Southampton

Fees and Funding

General information from the University of Southampton on fees and funding can be found by clicking the button. Specific information for the ORC can be found below.

UK applicants

We normally have a good number of fully funded scholarships available for UK applicants, with an enhanced tax-free stipend of up to £18k. Applications are accepted throughout the year but you should apply as early as possible in order to get the best choice of projects.

EU applicants

We are normally able to fund the fees of EU applicants but we only have limited funding to support living expenses. The competition for this funding is therefore tough and obtaining funding from any other source (e.g. self-funding) will increase chances of success. Please note that EU students who have been working or studying in the UK for the previous 3 years can be fully funded by the ORC as equivalent UK students.

International applicants

Please bear in mind that the competition and the funding for overseas (i.e. non UK/EU) students in particular is extremely intense and scarce as it is no longer possible for us to fully fund international studentships. Therefore, BEFORE you consider an application to the ORC you should seek external funding such as from your own government or other external funds which may be available, including self-funding, well ahead of preparing your application.

If you require an offer letter or any other supporting documents from the ORC in order to apply for an external scholarship please apply to the ORC in good time to enable us to meet any deadlines set by the external scholarship awarding body.

Our international fees are approximately £21,360 per annum for 3.5 years and we believe that a student needs at least £10,000 per annum in order to live in Southampton.

Specific instructions for:

  • Chinese Applicants: Many of our Chinese applicants apply for Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) scholarships to help support their PhD studies. In order to do this you should apply to the ORC before January 2017 stating in your application that you intend to apply for a CSC scholarship. We will then select the best CSC applicants and make them the offers that they would need in order to apply for the CSC scholarship (normally in March-April).

  • Mexican Applicants: Many of our Mexican applicants apply for a CONACYT scholarship to help support their PhD studies. In order to do this you should apply to the ORC in good time to enable us to interview you and make you an offer such that you can meet any deadlines required by CONACYT.

  • Commonwealth Applicants: Many of our applicants from Commonwealth countries apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship to help support their PhD studies. In order to do this you should apply to the ORC in good time in order for us to provide any supporting statements required.

  • Self funding applicants: Self-funded students will be required to cover their own programme fees and living expenses. Our international fees are approximately £21,360 per annum for 3.5 years and we believe that a student needs at least £10,000 per annum in order to live in Southampton.
