Applicants are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in the area of optical fibre fabrication. The project will primarily target the development of novel air guiding photonic band gap fibres with loss, nonlinearity and modal properties suitable for telecoms data transmission. This ambitious research program is sponsored by the European Union under the Seventh Framework Programme within the MODEGAP Integrated Project and involves various European academic and industrial partners.
Applicants must have a PhD in Physics/Engineering or equivalent, a strong background in optics and material science and relevant experience at post-graduate/post-doctoral level in fibre optics, glass science and/or fabrication of optical components. A hands-on approach and excellent experimental skills are necessary, along with a keen interest in developing new physical ideas from proof-of-principle to implementation. The applicants will be expected to work as part of a cohesive team, to interact with project partners and travel to our partners’ sites for regular project meetings.
The appointment is initially for a 2-year period, (ideally starting 1 March 2012 or soon thereafter), and with significant potential for further extension.
