Status Research on Advanced Material Chemistry

Abstract:
Professor Liu's laboratory is developing new materials formulations and exploring new synthesis methods based on the core technology of materials chemistry. These new formulations are potentially applied in industrial practice or have been patented. We are competent in determining the mechanisms of chemical reactions both theoretically and practically to control and discover applications of new materials. For revealing crystal structure and electronic band structure of the materials experimentally Liu's team employs a wide range of characterization techniques including, in particular, X-ray diffraction and absorption, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy and excitation-emission spectroscopy.
Recently his team has focused on nanomaterials and their applications - in particular the use of phosphors in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for lighting and displays. They have also worked in some sub-fields, such as hydrogen-storage materials, catalysts for fuel cells, quantum dot-sensitized solar cells, photocatalysts of production of hydrogen by water splitting, and the synthesis of gold nanorods for cancer therapy.
Biography:
Professor Ru-Shi Liu received his Bachelor degree in Chemistry from Shoochow University (Taiwan) in 1981, followed by a Masters in nuclear science from the National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan) in 1983, when he also joined Materials Research Laboratories at the Industrial Technology Research Institute as an Associate Researcher. He was promoted to Research Manager within two years. Liu obtained two PhD degrees in Chemistry from National Tsing Hua University in 1990 and from University of Cambridge in 1992. He joined the Department of Chemistry of the National Taiwan University in 1995 as Associate Professor and was appointed Professor in 1999. Liu’s work has continually been recognised: awarded Excellent Young Person Prize in 1989, Excellent Inventor Award (Argentine Medal) in 1995 and Excellent Young Chemist Award in 1998 his research into Materials Chemistry has led him to author and co-author over 400 publications in international science journals and he has also been granted more than 80 patents.
