Accelerator science is a key element for discoveries in high energy physics, and is a crucial source for many advances in biology, medicine, solid state physics, future energy production, and various other fields. The size of facilities spans from international mega projects to university-scale installations. Interdisciplinary research on the boundaries of accelerator, laser, and plasma physics will revolutionize the entire landscape of accelerator science and open possibilities for stronger connections to industries. The modern trends in accelerators and compact X-ray and THz sources will be discussed in the context of future plans of the John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science, as well as within the national and international context.
Andrei Seryi has started his scientific career in Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics, after graduating from Novosibirsk State University in 1986. His first research was focused on experimental investigation of fast electron cooling of proton and ion beams. In the consequent years A. Seryi was working on development of cancer therapy proton machines, and in particular on development of the linear collider design, which was the topic of his thesis and which continued through major part of his career. Dr. Seryi has been a visiting scientist at CEA Saclay and Femilab, and was working for more than a decade at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, before taking the post of the director of John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science since August of 2010. Professor Andrei Seryi has contributed to development of the methods to compensate beam-beam effects in hadron colliders, to development of beam delivery system for high-energy linear colliders, development of novel methods of acceleration, to design, construction, commissioning and leadership of several projects such as TEV-e-lens (beam-beam compensation), ATF2 (final focus test facility), FACET (plasma acceleration test facility). The present interests of Prof. Seryi are focused on the area of synergy between accelerators and lasers and in particular compact light sources.
