Abstract:

I will present our work on two types of optical microresonators which are both based on optical micro- and nanofibres. The first type is a fully tunable ultra-high-Q whispering-gallery-mode “bottle microresonator”, fabricated from standard optical glass fibres [1]. Due to its highly prolate shape, the bottle microresonator gives rise to a class of whispering-gallery-modes with advantageous properties. In addition to the radial confinement by continuous total internal reflection at the resonator surface, the light in these “bottle modes” oscillates back and forth along the resonator axis between two turning-points which are defined by an angular momentum barrier. The resulting axial standing wave modes exhibit an equidistant spectrum with a free spectral range that only depends on the curvature of the resonator profile. In particular, it can be designed to enable tuning of the bottle microresonator over one axial free spectral range via moderate mechanical strain. The second resonator concept is based on tapered optical fibres with a nanofibre waist. Here, the resonator is realised by either equipping the unprocessed fibre ends with reflective dielectric coatings or by integrating photonic Bragg reflectors on the nanofibre waist itself.
