"Photonic effects in dielectric eutectics"

Speaker: Prof. Victor M. Orera, ICMA, Univ. of Zaragoza, Spain

Date: Wednesday 8th October 2008

Time: 2pm

Venue: Building 46, Lecture Theatre B

 Abstract:

Eutectics grown from melt are a paradigm of micron scale materials with improved functional properties. Besides the exceptional mechanical properties consequence of the huge amount of clean interfaces, ordered regular eutectics are an example of self-assembled systems which may be used to produce fascinating microstructures for photonic applications in a very simple way:

Micron diameter, centimetre long ionic single crystal fibres: Several alkali halide based eutectics have been explored to produce fibrous structures to get single crystal fibres by chemical removing of one component.

Macroporous ionic single crystals: Removing one of the components from an eutectic with interpenetrating microstructure a porous ionic single crystal with more than 50% microcavities can be easily produced.

2D photonic crystals: Ordered fibrous eutectics behave as monolithic 2D photonic crystals

Glasses with the eutectic composition:  Using the favourable conditions of eutectic formulations for glass formation high optical quality glasses can be produced.

Enhanced up-conversion on aligned eutectics: Confinement of light and differential doping may be used to obtain new material luminescence properties.

Biography:

Prof. Victor M. Orera, PhD in Physics at the University of Zaragoza (1976). He is a Research Staff member (Full Professor) of the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC). He is the Head of the “Laser Procesing of Materials: Production and Characterization” (10 staff members) group of the Institute of Materials Science of Aragón (ICMA, CSIC-University of Zaragoza) in Zaragoza, Spain. He was CSIC Vice-President (2005-6), CSIC Institutional Coordinator for Aragón (2005), Member of the CSIC Scientific Committee (1996-2004), Member of the PESC (Physical and Engineering Steering Committee of the European Science Foundation, 1997-2000), Coordinator of the Materials Science Area of CSIC (1994-96), Institute Director; I.C.M.A., Consultant Scientist in the Solid State Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (USA, 1986-7), Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Zaragoza (1984-86).At present, his main research areas are the Laser Processing of Ceramics,  Preparation and Characterisation of Oxide Materials and Fuel Cells.

Recently, his Group has pioneering developments in eutectic ceramics both with structural and functional applications and new laser processing techniques as “in plane” directional solidification. In the field of Fuel Cells they fabricate microtubular FC based on YSZ, SSZ or GDC.Prof. Orera has published more than 155 articles and book chapters, 3 invited reviews. Over more than 200 communications to specialised meetings, 21 invited and plenary talks and has 5 patents. Total number of citations in ISI Web-of-Knowledge: 1350 and Hirsh H-Index: 20.

He was responsible for more than 20 large projects and industry contracts. His group obtains an average external budget of 1.000.000€/year without salaries.

Has been nominated Extraordinary Professor of the Electrical Engineering Dept. of the University of Zaragoza (2006), Fellow of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Zaragoza (2006), Award of the Spanish Electroceramic Society “Epsilon de Oro” (2005), Fellow of the American Physical Society (1993), Award of the UZ for PhD work with special distinction (1976), Award “Daza de Valdés” to the best Master Work on Optics (CSIC, 1973)
