The intensive use of the optical transparency and of the latest opto-electronic technologies may enable to expand the FTTH network performances and functionality, while minimizing the infrastructure requirements at both urban and rural areas. Next generation Passive Optical Networks will set an evolutionary path for G/E-PON and incorporate functionalities of metropolitan networks, envisaging access-metro convergence. Enabling technologies investigated are mainly: remotely pumped optical amplification, reflective SOA ONUs and hybrid modulation formats.
