"Optical nano recording and imaging by plasmonic nano structures"

The optical response of the local plasmonic structures of the plasmonic nano thin film is the key of the near-field optical imaging and recording. The developments of the plasmonic nano thin films are closely related to the basic principle of plasmonic nanophotonics, and the connections of the near-field and far-field optical interactions of plasmonic nano-structures. We use near-field scanning optical microscopy, Z-scan experiments, conductive atomic force microscope and optical pump-probe system to explore the optical interactions of various plasmonic nano thin films and their plasmonic structures. Many interesting local interactions were found. Measurements of transmission and reflectance indicate complicated long and short distance optical interactions of the plasmonic structures. Different local optical responses are observed and analyzed. Possible models of these interactions will be proposed and explained. Applications of the plasmonic nano thin films on the nano imaging and nano recording will be discussed. Figures 1(a) and 1(b) show the images of the normal and nano recording bits on GeSbTe phase change recording layer of a DVD disk by a conductive atomic force microscope.
Din Ping Tsai received his PhD degrees in Physics from University of Cincinnati, USA in 1990. From 1990 to 1991 he was a Member of Research Staff at Micro Lithography Inc., California, USA. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Associate at Ontario Laser and Lightwave Research Center, Toronto, Canada from 1991 to 1994. From 1994 to 1999 he was an Associate Professor at National Chung Cheng University, Taiwan. In 1999 he joined National Taiwan University (NTU) as an Associate Professor, and became Professor and Distinguished Professor of Department of Physics at NTU in 2001 and 2006, respectively. He was invited to join Research Center for Applied Sciences, Academia Sinica as an Adjunct Research Fellow in 2006 as well. He is a Fellow of International Society of Optical Engineering (SPIE), Optical Society of America (OSA), and Physics Society of R.O.C., and a Senior Member of IEEE. He is author and coauthor of 82 SCI journal papers, 31 book chapters and conference papers, and 32 technical reports and articles. He had 25 patents in USA, Japan, Canada, Germany and Taiwan. Three of his patents have been licensed to the world's largest optical disk manufacture company, Ritek Company in 2004. He had three technologies transfer to three different companies in last three years. His current research interests are nano-photonics, near-field optics and plasmonics. He was invited as an invited speaker for the international conference or symposium more than 42 times in last five years. He has received a number of prestigious awards including "Outstanding Achievement Award in Science and Technology" from Executive Yuan of Republic of China (R.O.C.), “Excellent Industry-Academy Cooperation Award” from Ministry of Education of R.O.C., “Fu Ssu-Nien Award,” "Outstanding Research Contribution Award" and "Excellent Senior Teacher Award" from NTU, "Excellent Contribution on Optical Technology Award" from Optical Engineering Society of R.O.C. (ROCEOS), "Outstanding Research Award" from Taiwan Information Storage Association (TISA), "Distinguished Alumni Award" from Soochow University, Taiwan, “Golden Pen Award” from Electronics Monthly, Taiwan. He was elected as the chair and vice chair of the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) Taiwan chapter for the 2004 & 2005 and 1996 & 1997, respectively. He is a member of technical committee of IEEE/LEOS nanophotonics. He serves as a member of editorial boards of “Plasmonics” (Springer Journal Publication), “JEOS Rapid Publication” (Journal of the European Optical Society: Rapid publications - ISSN 1990-2573), “Opto-Electronics Letters” and “Opto News & Letters,” respectively. He is the chief editor of “Taiwan Nano Newsletters.” He has served as chairs and committee members of several international conferences and symposiums, such as ISOM, ODS, ISOS, ISPS, NFO, APNFO, SPIE, etc. He is member of the boards of Optical Engineering Society of R. O. C., Taiwan Nanotechnology Industrialization Development Association and Taiwan Information Storage Association, respectively.
