"Highly-doped waveguide active devices"

Speaker: Professor Stefano Taccheo

Date: Wednesday 13 June
Venue: Lecture Theatre A (Building 44)
Time: 2pm

Abstract

Active waveguide devices offer several advantages with respect to their fibre or bulk alternatives. Some of the most interesting of these include compactness, low-cost mass production, lower sensitivity to environmental noise, and the possibility of integrating several functionalities within each device. However, several constraints have limited the development and performance of active waveguide devices, such as the optical amplifier or laser, in suitable applications. One of the main restrictions is the necessity of dealing with high-rare earth doping levels.

This talk will present the activity carried out at Politecnico di Milano and will concentrate on ultra-short active devices. The talk will present the technique developed to characterize an active material and design the devices. We will also review and compare several hosts for different applications. As an example the talk will focus on Er-doped glass on silicon optical amplifier for telecom applications and an Er-doped single-frequency laser for sensing applications.
