BioMEMS

Our current interests include the creation of an integrated device for processing of sub-microlitres of bioanalyte. The main aim of the project is to pump the solution droplet around a microfluidic micro total analysis system using an integrated peristaltic pump. The droplet is controlled by the use of integrated droplet detectors and the bioanalyte is processed in the heated reaction chambers. Other interests include microfluidic devices with integrated optical elements and magnetically actuated pipetting devices.
Biological Micro-electromechanical systems are being developed and present activities include:
- integrated microfluidic/optical devices for biochemistry using microlitre or sub-microlitre volumes
- liquid filled core waveguide structures for efficient collection of fluorescence for biosensing applications
