Phase Change Properties of Chalcogenide Materials

Contact: Rob Simpson

This project is concerned with the thin film phase change properties of chalcogenide materials. The main aim of the project is discovery of new compositions which can be readily switched between the glassy and crystalline states. For optical and electrical data storage applications the materials should be stable in both phases, have a fast crystallisation time, require low energies to switch yet have a high crystallisation activation energy such that they don’t spontaneously switch at normal operating temperatures.

This work is being done in collaboration with the Surface Science Group in the School of Chemistry and with the support of Ilikia Technlogies Ltd who have provided equipment and materials.
